Body modification is the practice of modifying the natural human form. It typically does not cover medical operations, but rather aesthetic or functional but non necessary changes, typically not performed by surgeons or other similarly licensed medical professionals

History

Body modification has a very rich history in cultures. Ötzi the iceman is the oldest preserved example of tattoing, at over 5000 years old, and also had pierced ears. Though there is earlier evidence of both practices.

Common forms

Tattooing and piercings are the most common and socially accepted forms of body modification, but implants, scarification, genetic modification and other types of body modification exist.
